ETF는 기본적으로 벤치마크를 추종 하는 형태로 운용되는 시스템화된 펀드이므로 특정한 매니저 개인의 능력보다는 회사의 전반적인 운용시스템에 좌우되기 때문에 액티브 펀드가 가지고 있는 매니저 교체에 따른 성과저하를 고민할 필요가 없다. 동일한 벤치마크를 추종하는 ETF라고 하면 거의 유사한 수익률을 보여주게 되어 펀드가 성과 편차가 크지 않으므로, ETF가 추종하는 벤치마크에 대한 이해만 있다면 어떤 펀드를 선택할지에 대한 고민을 많이 할 필요가 없다.

결과적으로 ETF 투자를 포함한 패시브(passive) 투자는 쉽고 편한 투자 방식이다. 투자성과가 시장평균을 하회할 위험도 적고, 장기적으로 성과도 다른 펀드대비 나쁘지 않고, 번거롭게 펀드를 골라야 하는 수고로움도 적다. ETF 투자자는 자신의 능력과 한계를 신 앞에 겸손히 인정하고, 수익률에 대한 과도한 욕심과 탐욕을 버리고, 현재의 삶에 안분하고 자족하는 투자자가 아닐까 생각해 본다.

비트코인 상장지수펀드(ETF)가 미 증시에서 흥행에 성공하면서 비트코인 가격이 6만6천달러를 돌파해 반년만에 사상 최고가 기록을 갈아치웠다.

21일 암호화폐 매체 코인데스크 시세를 보면, 비트코인 가격은 한때 개당 6만6978달러(7866만원)까지 치솟아 지난 4월14일 기록한 종전 최고가(6만4802달러)를 훌쩍 바이너리 ETF 뛰어넘었다. 오후 4시 현재는 오름폭이 줄어 6만5000달러에서 움직이고 있다. 과거에는 폭락 이후 고점 회복에 2~3년이 걸렸다는 점에서 이번 반등은 이례적으로 빠른 편이다. 이로써 비트코인은 세계에서 8번째로 큰 규모의 자산이 됐다. 비트코인 시가총액은 1조2400억달러로 원자재와 개별주식 등을 포함한 자산 가운데 은(1조3300억달러)에 이어 8위에 올랐다. 국내 거래업체 업비트에서 비트코인 가격은 한때 8007만원까지 올랐지만 4월 최고가(8199만원)를 깨는 데는 실패했다. 국제 시세보다 가격이 높은 ‘김치 프리미엄’이 당시 과도하게 붙었던 탓이다.

비트코인 선물에 투자하는 미국 최초의 상장지수펀드(ETF)가 초반 흥행에 성공하면서 비트코인 실물 가격을 끌어올린 것으로 풀이된다. 20일(현지시각) 뉴욕증권거래소에서 비트코인 선물펀드 비토(BITO)는 3.2% 상승한 43.28달러로 마감해 상장 이틀만에 공모가 대비 8.2% 올랐다. 거래대금도 12억달러를 넘어서는 등 뜨거운 관심을 불러일으켰다. 이 펀드는 시카고상품거래소(CME)에 상장된 비트코인 선물 가격의 흐름을 따라가도록 설계됐다. 오는 25일에는 또다른 비트코인 선물 펀드의 거래가 시작되는 등 연말까지 8개 펀드가 추가로 상장될 예정이다. 이 펀드들이 시장에 성공적으로 안착할 경우 비트코인 실물을 담은 펀드의 승인 여부도 논의될 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.

비트코인 펀드의 뉴욕증시 상장은 암호화폐(가상자산) 시장의 주도권이 중국에서 미국으로 넘어가고 있음을 보여준다. 중국 정부가 암호화폐 거래와 채굴 금지 등 강력한 규제에 나서면서 채굴업체 상당수는 미국으로 옮겨갔다. 비트코인의 제도권 편입을 일찌감치 준비해온 미국 중심으로 향후 암호화폐 시장이 재편될 것이라는 관측이 나온다.

최근 에너지발 인플레이션 위험이 커진 것도 비트코인 가격 상승을 부추겼다. 비트코인 가격은 이달 들어서만 50% 올랐다. 이더리움이 최고가에 근접하는 등 다른 암호화폐 가격도 동반상승했다. 억만장자 헤지펀드 매니저인 폴 튜더 존스는 이날 시엔비시(CNBC) 방송에 나와 “인플레 위험 회피수단으로 금보다 비트코인을 선호한다”며 “포트폴리오의 10% 미만을 암호화폐에 베팅하고 있다”고 말했다. 세계적인 채권운용사 핌코도 암호화폐 투자를 고려 중이라고 밝혀 금융기관들의 자금이 유입될 것이라는 기대도 나온다.

하지만 투기적 거래에 따른 엄청난 변동성 등 암호화폐의 약점이 여전해 경계하는 시각도 많다. 세계적인 에너지 위기로 전력 소모가 많은 비트코인 채굴에 대한 추가 규제 가능성도 거론된다. 무엇보다 각국 중앙은행들이 돈줄 조이기에 나서고 있어 유동성 압박이 커질 수 있다.

국내 개인투자자들도 기존 증권계좌를 통해 미 증시의 비트코인 펀드를 거래할 수 있게 됐다. 다만 해외 상장지수펀드는 매매차익의 22%를 세금으로 뗀다. 정부가 내년부터 가상자산 소득에도 과세할 방침이어서 투자자들의 선택이 주목된다.
